Why Is My Office Wi-Fi Slow?

Written By Rahat Chowdhury

Slow office Wi-Fi is frustrating because the cause isn't always obvious.

The internet connection may be fast, your laptop may show a strong signal, and yet video calls still freeze or applications take too long to respond.

That's because Wi-Fi performance and internet speed are not the same thing.

Several different problems can create poor wireless performance.

1. Poor access-point placement

Wi-Fi signals don't travel equally through every environment.

Walls, floors, furniture, building materials and the physical layout of an office all affect coverage.

An access point installed wherever it was easiest to run a cable may not be positioned where it provides the best service.

2. Too many devices

Modern businesses connect far more than laptops.

Phones, tablets, printers, CCTV equipment, televisions, speakers and other devices may all use the network.

An environment that worked perfectly for five people may struggle after the company grows to twenty.

3. Interference and congestion

Wireless networks share radio frequencies with other networks and devices.

In busy buildings, multiple nearby wireless networks can compete for available spectrum.

Appropriate planning and configuration can therefore matter just as much as raw signal strength.

4. The internet connection

Sometimes Wi-Fi isn't actually the problem.

If the underlying broadband or leased connection is slow or unreliable, improving wireless coverage won't fix it.

Troubleshooting should therefore separate internet performance from local Wi-Fi performance.

5. Outdated equipment

Older routers and access points may not be suitable for the number of users, devices or performance expectations of a growing business.

6. Poor network design

Adding another cheap extender whenever coverage is poor can create an increasingly complicated network without solving the underlying issue.

Business networks benefit from being designed as a complete system.

Diagnose before replacing

The answer to slow Wi-Fi isn't automatically "buy faster Wi-Fi".

First establish where the problem actually exists.

That may involve examining:

  • internet performance;

  • wireless coverage;

  • connected devices;

  • access-point positioning;

  • network equipment;

  • configuration;

  • usage patterns.

Once the cause is understood, the solution becomes much clearer.

RC IT Services designs and installs business Wi-Fi networks and can provide ongoing network monitoring after installation.
